LED sump light

Postby MARK GOODCHILD » Sun Oct 04, 2009 9:37 am

hi all

i have just got myself an LED light used to grow vegies ect. its been on my sump for about 10 days now and my chaeto seems to like it

it has 225 LED only uses 15W and "puts out the same amount of light as a 200W light" and only cost £35 inc postage

if this light works well i will be getting a whole bank of these for my planned 6'x2'x2' refugium that i am hoping to add very soon

regads
mark

PS ill keep you all posted on how its going

Hi Mark,

I have been considering something like that for a while but I was concerned about them being near water. How far from the water did you put yours?

Thanks

That sounds very interesting!

Keep us posted!

Less wats is always a winner to me!

Are you going to be running them 24/7 or reverse cycle?

hi mate

it is currently sitting about 4" from the water surface

but i am thinking of moving it about 18" above the surface just to make accessing the sump easier

i am running 24/7 as i always do with sump lighting

but when i setup my 6'x2'x2' DSB algue tank i am thinking of running half the tank on 12 hours and the other half off 12 hours and then swap and running the flow through the dark end first so that any co2 made by the dark end is pulled out by the chaeto ect in the lighted end

Hi to you all,
I have got just one of these lamps over my deep sand bed that measures 40cm x 40 cm and the results are really good. It has been in position now for 7 months and have no problems with plant growth.
Thanks

Hi Mark,

Quick question here -

What spectrum did you get - I'm guessing somewhere in the 6000k - 7000k area?

This would be the red & Blue from looking at the claimed kelvin rating?

Cheers

Looking on Ebay they seem to come in a variety of colours and colour mixes.

When used over a sump is the red & blue one the best spectrum?

Would the bright white one be any good?

hi mate

i have the red/blue one on my sump

i also have my mates soft corals in my sump ATM and they seem to be doing fine under the LEDs and 1 old T8 tube they have been in my sump now for about 2 months

i havent seen the bright white ones do you know what k rating they are

if they are rated above 9000k 1 would be tempted to try one on my tank

hi mate

6000k to 7000k would be fine for corals but would look a little yellow to the eye

but if you add come blue lighting it think it would look ok
