Hi Lee,

I think this is more openly known as hair algae - and can become a real problem!

The key to keeping this down is:
1) Low Nitrate
2) Low Phosphate
3) bulb replacement (6 months for T5 and 18months for Halide max)

Could any of these things be an issue with your dads tank?

Can you give us some more information on the tank, and also a few pics?

HTH

Tony

Hi Lee,

Welcome to ReefsUK!

Just to add with what Tony has said hair algae tends to grow rampant with being fed via excessive nutrients.

High nitrates and phosphates, poor circulation, poor skimming, over feeding can all lead to hair algae outbreaks.

Cheers

Hi,

I would run the skimmer 24/7 to help reduce DOC levels.

I would double check the phosphate levels with a D+D test kit if you have not lready done so and also add a phosphate reducing resin such as Ultiphos to eliminate and being produced.

Cheers
